India Bracy Swepston, born October 22, 1921 in Monticello, AR, passed away on November 20th, 2012 in Tulsa, OK. India was preceded in death by her husband Gene, her parents, Harry and Annie Hankins, and her brothers Carroll and Sterling Hankins. Survivors include her three children, Carol Duncan and her husband Bill of Millersville, MD, Gene and his wife Heather of Tulsa, OK, Paul and his wife Barbara of The Woodlands, TX. She is also survived by four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, James Duncan, his wife Wendy and their children Addison and Megan of Reston, VA, Elizabeth Duncan of Washington, DC, Tim Swepston and his wife Emma of New Orleans, LA and Tim’s son, Fain Swepston of Nashville, NC, and Alex Garrison of Tulsa, OK.
India graduated with a teaching degree from Henderson State Teachers College, taught elementary school while her husband Gene was overseas during WWII and later was a reading tutor in Little Rock. She spent over 30 years engaged in creative writing at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. She was a published and award winning poet and short story writer, her first published article appearing in True Confessions in 1972. Her favorite memories were travels to Buffalo River, DeGray Lodge for the eagle watch, New Year’s Eve at the Red Apple Inn, New York to the theater, travel throughout Europe, the Little Rock Dance Club, Bookfellows, Henderson War Years reunion group, the season subscription to The REP and St Paul Methodist Church. At St Paul she was a Sunday school teacher, president of the Women's Society and wrote the annual Christmas play.
The family would like to thank Good Shepard Retirement Center of Little Rock, Cypress Springs Alzheimer's and Memory Support of Tulsa and Rose Rock Hospice of Tulsa for their loving care and comfort.
