Percy Lee Williams, 92, formerly of Detroit, Michigan passed away August
19, 2014 in Tulsa. He was born in Huntsville, Alabama on May 17, 1922
to John and Willie Mae (Turner) Williams.
Percy was affectionately known as "Mr. Percy", "Uncle P"
and "Dad". Percy was an only child raised by his grandmother,
Annie Mae Cadenhead in Birmingham. He graduated from Parker High School
in June, 1942 and immediately joined the U.S. Navy during World War II.
He served at the Great Lakes Naval Station in Illinois until 1945.
After the war Percy married Janet Williams of Seattle, Washington and their
son, Aaron Hairston was born. Later, Percy moved to Detroit and began
a career teaching in the Detroit Public School system. He married Mary
Fortner Hall, a fellow educator, in 1975 and remained devotedly married
to her until her death in 1995. In 2013 Percy moved from Detroit to Tulsa
to be closer to family.
Percy held many interesting jobs during his life including, working at
the Great Northern Railroad in Washington, Chrysler Corporation, MGM Grand
Casino, Metropolitan Airport and McDonald's restaurant in Detroit.
He often catered and hosted dinner parties for clients, family and friends
and was a Mary Kay Consultant. For most of his professional life he was
an Educator and Commercial Foods instructor at Murray-Wright High School,
Breithhaupt High School and Oakland Community College in Detroit.
Percy was preceded in death by his grandmother, Annie Mae Cadenhead; mother,
Willie Mae Turner; father, James Williams; Janet Williams and Mary Fortner
Hall Williams. Brother in law, John Fortner, sisters in law, Eunice (Johnny)
Eubanks and Bethel (Hamlin) Moseley and nephews, Donald Sutton and Abraham Sutton.
He is survived by his son and daughter in law, Aaron (Kate) Hairston of
Seattle; grandchildren and great grandchildren, Arastede Hairston, Christian
Hairston, Islaam Kendrick, Aaron Hairston, Jr., Tanya, Ashlyn and Avery
Hairston, A'Miyah Barquet, Nyri Kosar, Mutafa Shabazz and Daniel Moore.
He is also survived by sister in law, Henrietta (Alfred) Austin; nieces
and nephews, Sharon Galloway, Tonya (Ralph) Guevara, April Eubanks, Kim
Eubanks, Venecia (Ron) Price, Brian (Articia) Cobbs, Derrick Minter, Lynne
(Reginald) Logan and Dana Galloway; and many great nieces and nephews,
family and friends. Also surviving Percy, special friends, Glenda Grafton,
Deborah Virgiles, Jacqueline (Greg) Harris, Connie Harris, Ernest (Mary)
Austin, David Watts, Oakland Kimbrough and Juanita Parnell.
A memorial graveside will be held 10:00am, Friday, September 5, 2014 at
Fort Gibson National Cemetery.
