Winston Richard Travis, Sr., was born on December 25, 1929, in Claremore, OK, to Maethella Burr and Terrell Troupe. His early years were spent in Claremore until his mother's family relocated to Muskogee, OK. Winston went with his family to Mount Cavalry Baptist Church where he was baptized as a child. Winston attended Muskogee Public Schools, graduating from the historic Manual Training High School in 1949. Shortly thereafter, he enlisted in the United States Army, where he served for several years until he was honorably discharged.
Shortly after his discharge, he moved to Detroit, MI, where his mother had relocated. There he was employed by Chrysler/Plymouth for several decades. While living in Detroit, Winston was a member of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, where he joyfully served on the Usher Board. During those years he experienced the joy of marriage and the birth of children.
In the early 1980s, following his mother's retirement and return to Muskogee, Winston returned to Muskogee. Once again he became an integral part of his home church, Mount Calvary Baptist Church. As his mother's health deteriorated, she and Winston made Tulsa their home. In Tulsa he was a member of Greater Union Baptist Church, where he served proudly as an usher. For many years he was an avid walker and enjoyed riding his stationary bike to keep in shape. Some years following his mother's passing Winston himself experienced health issues that led to the need for 24-hour care. He moved into the Maplewood Care Center.
Winston was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, 9 uncles and 1 aunt; his 3rd son, Barry Pierre Travis, preceded him in death in 2005.
On Saturday, September 1, 2012, God called Winston from this earthly toil to everlasting life with the God he had sought to serve all his life.
He leaves to cherish his memory: His children; Winston R. Travis, Jr. (Ricky), Debra L. Travis, Keith Alexander Travis, all of Michigan, and Nicole Travis and Michael Travis of Tulsa; 1 grandson, Ronell, 2 great-grand-daughters, Melena and Tamera, all of Conyers, Georgia; his aunt, Berniece Burr Smith of Arlington , TX, a host of cousins, other relatives and friends.
