Obituary

Owen D. Austin, of Tulsa Oklahoma, loving Father, Grandfather, Brother, and Friend, was called home to the arms of our Lord on December 13, 2018. He was 98 years old. Owen was the first-born to Jesse Dar and Arria Dell (Hutson) Austin, November 27, 1920 in Bristow, OK. As a young man in 1937, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps, serving the Department of the Interior Bureau of Reclamation at Camp BR22C, Company 2803. In 1942, during World War II, Owen served with the 45th Infantry Division of the United States Army as a Provisioner with a rank of Lieutenant, in 1952, Owen served as a Captain with the 45th Infantry Division in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged from the Oklahoma National Guard September 1957. Between the World War II and Korean conflict, Owen graduated from the Oklahoma City Law School in 1950, and by way of a special accommodation due to his military service, was allowed to graduate college and sit for the bar exam, despite not finishing High School. Owen's professional career included being an Auditor for the Internal Revenue Service, Manager for the Ingersoll Walters Ranch, Owner of the Downtown Motel on 11th Street, a Field Representative for the Oklahoma Tax Commission Enforcement Division, and as advisory and principal ownership of several Oklahoma businesses. Owen's professional legal work continued as Assistant District Attorney for Haskell County Oklahoma. He also was an Attorney for the Howard & Widdows Law Firm, and in private practice. Owen's community involvement was extensive throughout his life and as a proud "Yellow Dog Democrat" and American Patriot, was active in many political circles within the State of Oklahoma. Ongoing involvement with The Freemasons, The Shiners, and The Gideons International further allowed Owen to dedicate his time and gifts to others. Retirement at Woodland Terrace in Tulsa brought even further opportunities for community involvement. Owen was instrumental in bringing local banking services to Woodland Terrace, as well as founding the weekly Church services, and establishing a polling location for elections in their lobby. He also donated a series of Gaither program tapes to Woodland Terrace, which are still utilized weekly as a taped spiritual ministry. Owen loved each and every one of the members of Woodland Terrace's Staff where he made his home for over 19 years. Owen's family and friends remember him as a smart, friendly, helpful, loving, patriotic and brave man-in-charge with an incredible sense of humor, but even more so, a dedicated man of God who found Amazing Grace to be his personal testimony. Owen is survived by his daughter, Veta Faye (Austin) Batten and Son-in-law Steve Batten of New York/Florida; his Daughter-in-law Joni Austin of Texas; his four grandchildren Lyn (Batten) Monnette (Michael Monnette) of FL, Stephanie Batten of FL, Brandon Austin (Tara Austin) of TX and Josh Austin (Lauren Austin) of TX; and his eight great-grandchildren Jessica, Amanda, Matthew, and Christopher Monnette of FL, Alex and Ben Austin of TX, Hazel and Maverick Austin of TX and his sister Ruby Childress of California, and a loving family of numerous nieces and nephews, and extended family.
