Sigurd 'Morris' Mathisen
April 12, 1932 – November 12, 2019
Sigurd 'Morris' Mathisen passed away peacefully on November 12, 2019, at the age of 87. Morris was born in 1932 in Brooklyn, NY, to immigrant parents who as teenagers traveled from Sweden and Norway, only to meet at a dance in Brooklyn. When Morris was three, the young family moved to Virginia. Morris grew up in Norfolk, VA, where he first met the love of his life, Clara Evelyn Bebler at a bus stop.
Morris and Evelyn both graduated from Norfolk's Granby High School, where Morris was the school newspaper photographer, and Evelyn his favorite subject. After high school he attended Virginia Polytechnic Institute where he studied architecture and construction engineering, he left VPI in 1952 to marry his beloved Evelyn and start a family. He designed and built houses for his growing family in both Norfolk and Virginia Beach and over the next ten years the couple would have five children, one dog, and countless cats. The family (and cats) later traveled and lived throughout the United States as Morris advanced his career in construction management, building a varied number of large construction projects from Coca-Cola bottling plants to Nuclear energy plants. He and Evelyn retired in 1991 to a life-on-the-road in an RV, their lifelong dream. After 11 years of traveling the country, they settled in Collinsville, OK, the last stop for this adventurous couple.
Morris is survived by son Morris Jr, his wife Susie Mathisen, grandson Stephen and wife Monika Mathisen, great grandchildren Reed, Kit and Hank; Granddaughter Stephanie and husband Damon Richmond , great grandchildren Dylan and Gage; granddaughter Melissa Mathisen, grandsons James Rogers, Shane Rogers and wife Chrissy, great grandchildren Madison and Lucy; granddaughters Amber Rogers, and Patty Mathisen and fiancé Alexis Romer; daughter Debbie and husband George Mellinger, grandchildren Rachel, James and David; daughter Laura Mathisen and husband Larry Sullivan, grandson Colton; daughter Cindy Ouverson, grandson Scott and wife Christy Ouverson, great grandchildren Michael and wife Kelly Ouverson, great great-great grandchildren Kace and Callum, great grandchildren Kai, and Kendal; granddaughter Nicole and husband Doug Mader, great grandchildren Bailey, Jacob and McKenna; son Bob Mathisen and fiancé' Laura Reman.
