Betty Jean Black was born on October 5, 1951 in Modesto, California to William and Lena Smith. Betty was the 5 th of 10 children. Her family moved to Tulsa when Betty was just a few months old. She attended Lowell High School in Tulsa. She became a mother, caring for her nine children through their growing years. She would take them fishing and camping. Sometimes she would lock the door on them so they would stay outside and play. They enjoyed watching movies together as a family. Betty taught all her children to cook. One on their favorite meals was beans, taters and cornbread. When she could find the time, Betty loved going to the casino and playing the wild cherry games and quarter slots. She also taught her children respect and love for themselves and each other, which is a tribute to her as they gather here together to celebrate the wonderful mother she was.
