Obituary

Betty Louise Marriott (Shepherd) was born on March 5th, 1931 in Punkin Hollow, just outside of Tahlequah, Oklahoma to David S. Shepherd and Bonnie B. Shepherd (Johnson). She attended grade school at the schoolhouse in Punkin Hollow, and attended Tahlequah High School graduating in 1949. She worked two jobs to pay for her education at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, graduating with a Bachelor's Degree and her Teaching Certificate. She then relocated to Coffeyville, Kansas to embark on her teaching career as a first grade teacher.

In Coffeyville she met George Ernest Marriott and married him in Tahlequah on June 6th, 1954. She stayed with her mother in law for a short time before joining George in Versaille, France while he was deployed. Betty and George had their two children while stationed in France. Michael was adopted in March of 1957 and Peter was born in May of 1957. The family then returned shortly thereafter to the US and settled in Pittsburg, Kansas.

After moving from Pittsburg, Kansas to Topeka the family then decided to relocate to Tulsa, Oklahoma for George to attend the University of Tulsa. Betty taught in multiple schools in the Tulsa Public School District before making her teaching home at Mark Twain Elementary, where she taught first grade for 24 years. Betty settled in Sand Springs, Oklahoma in 1963, and retired from teaching in 1987.

In her retirement, Betty enjoyed social outings with friends such as dinners, dancing, and Toastmasters. She was heavily involved at St. Matthews Episcopal Church in Sand Springs. As a member of the Altar Guild her gardening skills came in handy. The flowers she loved to grow in her garden decorated the altar for many years. Betty was an avid and artistic seamstress and quilter. She hand quilted unique quilts for her children, every grandchild and every great grandchild.

In the last 9 years of Betty's life she was cared for by her son Peter and daughter in law Jennifer, which allowed her to stay in her beloved Sand Springs home.

Betty is predeceased by her parents and her 4 younger siblings, JB, Harold, Shirley and Linda Kay as well as her son Michael.

Betty will be forever missed by her son Peter, daughter in law Jennifer, her 10 grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as her many nieces and nephews.

Per Betty's wishes there will not be a funeral service. Betty's request is for people to become a blood donor, become an organ donor, support Alzheimer's research, support transplant research, and most of all, support public education and your public school teachers.
