Betty Carolyn Murdock of Tulsa died, Thursday, September 7, 2017, peacefully of natural causes. She was 88 years old. Mrs. Murdock was born in Oklahoma City on February 6, 1929 and grew up in Hartshorne, OK where her parents, the late Elmer and Juanita Thrower, owned and published the Hartshorne Sun until their retirement in 1966. Upon graduating high school, Mrs. Murdock attended Phillips University in Enid and graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a BA degree in journalism. She worked as a reporter in the Society and Women's department of The Daily Oklahoman and the Oklahoma City Times. In 1955, she and her husband, the late Virgil Murdock, moved to Cambridge, MA where he attended and graduated from the Harvard Divinity School. They remained in Massachusetts until his retirement in 1986 when they returned to Oklahoma and settled in Tulsa. Mrs. Murdock was active in a number of charitable organizations in Massachusetts. In Tulsa, she was a Gillie at the Gilcrease Museum and a member of All Souls Unitarian Church. Survivors include her daughter, Lisa Carolyn Ake, and her husband Tracy Ake, of Bristow, VA; a sister, Janice Elliott of Nashville, TN; and a brother, Frank Thrower of Dallas, TX; grandchildren, Hayley Ake, Hannah Ake, and Sam Ake all of Bristow, VA. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the doctors, nurses and staff at the Aberdeen Heights Assisted Living facility who provided such excellent care. A Memorial Service will be held Tuesday, September 12, 2017 at 1:00 p.m. at the All Souls Unitarian Church, 2952 S. Peoria, Tulsa, OK 74114.
