Obituary

Billy Ray Porter, age 60, passed away at his home in Stillwater, Oklahoma on March 16, 2016 after a 15 month battle with colon cancer. Mr. Porter was born January 1, 1956 in Kingfisher, Oklahoma to Frank and Bernice Porter. Bill gave his life to Christ as a young boy at High Hill Baptist Church in New Mexico. He graduated high school from Rush Springs in 1973 and was awarded the prestigious honor of State Farmer. In 1980 Bill graduated from Oklahoma State University with an Agricultural Economics degree. He married the love of his life, Pamela, on August 13, 1988 in Rush Springs, Ok. Bill enjoyed his job and co-workers at USDA- Natural Resources Conservation Service for over 36 years. For the past 21 years he served as the Assistant State Conservationist for Water Resources and was instrumental in Watershed Rehabilitation Program nationwide. Bill was recognized and given many awards for his outstanding work achievements. He also served as a youth football coach in both Woodward and Stillwater for more than 20 years. He was one of the founding leaders who started the Stillwater Youth Football Association. His hobbies were many but he loved college football, especially Oklahoma State University and the Sooners at the University of Oklahoma. He was an avid Star Wars fan and has an extensive collection of memorabilia. For many years Bill enjoyed cooking and entertaining. One way he showed you that he cared for you was by preparing a special meal. His favorite holiday was Thanksgiving and he would take off work all week and prepare the big feast for about 25 family members which included home-made rolls and smoked cheeses. Every week at Life Church, Bill proudly drove the golf cart at the 11:30 service up until the time of his illness. He loved to travel and was able to vacation with his wife to many states in the US. Bill is preceded in death by his parents Frank and Bernice Porter and sister Sharon Holloway. Survivors include his wife of 28 years, Pamela Porter; son: Christopher Ham, daughter-in-law: Katy Ham; granddaughter: Kelody Ham; niece: Lesli Cutshall and husband Scott along with daughter Laura; nephew: Marc Holloway and children Elizabeth and Geoffery; cousins: Jack David and JaneAnn Porter and Aunt Elizabeth Porter. The family asks in lieu of flowers that memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society. His funeral service was held at Life Church in Stillwater on March 22, 2016 and was conducted by his pastor, Cody Chaloner.
