Obituary

Bruce Christy Wiley was born November 3rd 1947 in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was the only child of Charles Lester and Edna Grace Wiley.

His first home was in one-half of a duplex at 10th and Rockford with his grandmother and grandfather Christy living in the other half. When he was a toddler, his grandfather created a doorway through an adjoining wall so that he wouldn't have to go outdoors to visit (in case "those" people weren't treating him right). Bruce attended Lanier Elementary, Wilson Junior High (the way God intended-not a middle school), and Will Rogers High School. He was a proud graduate of the University of Tulsa (an educational institution as opposed to one of those football academies). He later graduated from Southern Methodist University banking school.

Bruce always said he reinvented himself every few years. He worked retail; was a banker in Corpus Christi, Texas; worked for BK Johnson, an heir to the King Ranch, which afforded him the opportunity to put together real estate deals including the building of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in San Antonio, as well as international travel; was employed by the FDIC, where he was a really popular guy, involved in the closing of a number of banks. He always said there were certain Oklahoma counties he made sure he left before sundown; finishing his work life at a cellular phone company, where he was nicknamed "Bruce Almighty, " which he loved even though he'd never seen the movie.

Bruce was predeceased by his parents, grandparents, and his much loved great nephew, Cohen Potter. Bruce leaves behind his wife, Kerry; his cousins, Patty and Alan Lucke, Jeanne and Ron Norris, and Tommy and Sheryl Schultz, their children and grandchildren. He is also survived by Kerry's family, including Dave and Lynette Potter, Ann and Russell Martin, Chad and Jackie Potter, their children Carson, Kennedy, Mia, and Gordy; John and Vashti Hatfield, their children Megan and Zach; Mark and Jenny Martin, their children Ellie and Addie, Jason and Kelly Cunningham.

Bruce considered so many friends to be family, the greatest being Craig Hoster, who called him every single day during his illness. Thank you, Craig. Bruce was a lifelong Presbyterian. He always said that he came to the Lord via a bowl of three-way chili.

As a young man, his mother told him he would be attending confirmation classes on Saturdays. She "enticed" him with money to go to Ike's after each class. Evidently the classes set him on a path that led him to dedicate himself in his later years to the Eastern Oklahoma Presbytery, including serving as the 2022 Moderator. He walked alongside pastors as a friend and sounding board. At the time of his death on June 13, 2023, Bruce was serving as Elder, chairman of the finance committee, and the church treasurer at Southminster Presbyterian Church.
