Carole Jane Godfrey Joyce was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on May 2, 1938, the daughter of Merle and Katherine Godfrey. She died on July 25, 2016, in Claremore. Carole was preceded in death by her father and mother, and son Bret Barlow, and is survived by her husband of 40 years, Davis D. Joyce of Spavinaw, daughter Elizabeth Dawn Barlow of Snow, step-sons Kent Joyce of Noble and Kirk Joyce of Fayetteville, Arkansas, and brothers Richard Godfrey of Carlsbad, New Mexico, and Phillip Godfrey of Clinton, Utah. Her memorial service is August 6 at 4:00 PM at All Souls Unitarian Church. Carole graduated from Central High School in 1956 and attended both Oklahoma State University and the University of Tulsa. Family and friends will surely miss most the beauty of Carole's smile. Most who knew her knew that dancing was perhaps her greatest passion (though working with flowers and plants was surely a close second). She was a life-long dancer, dance instructor, and choreographer. She joined All Souls shortly after she and Davis were married in 1975, and quickly stepped into the important position of chair of Religion in Action, the social action committee at that time; in that role, one of her greatest accomplishments was to help start what is known today as the Oklahoma Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice (ORCRC). (She was an activist for other causes as well, including gay rights and community organizing.) Carole was also an excellent writer; her work included a series of guest editorials for the TULSA TRIBUNE and chapters for two of Davis' books on Oklahoma history. Donations in Carole's memory can be made to ORCRC or to RECESS+, dedicated to teaching self-regulation to children in low income schools in North Tulsa.
