Obituary

Cynthia was born in Lawrence, Kansas on July 14, 1947 and passed from this life into God's eternal presence on February 22, 2024, in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Cynthia and her parents moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma in 1947 when her father accepted a job with Stanolin Oil and Gas Company (Amoco) upon his graduation from the University of Kansas. When she was 5 years of age, the family was transferred to Ft. Worth, Texas where she received the majority of her education. She graduated from Polytechnic High School in Ft. Worth in 1965 and attended her freshman year of college at North Texas State University in Denton, Texas. In 1966, Amoco moved the family back to Tulsa. At that time, Cynthia transferred to the University of Oklahoma where she received a Bachelor of Arts degree in music education in 1970.

Cynthia married Bill Wiles on July 5, 1980 at Christ United Methodist Church in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She worked at St. John Medical Center for 37 years, serving first as the administrative assistant to the Medical Director and then leading the launch of St. John's PulseLine information referral service which she ran until her retirement in June, 2017. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Tulsa, Presbyterian Women, and the Forum Sunday School class. She also served as a Stephen Minister and an ordained Deacon.

Cynthia Wiles was a woman of unwavering faith and a dedicated servant to the Lord. She was a beautiful person inside and out whose love and attention to her family was always on display. She especially prized being a grandmother to Kourtney King.

Cynthia was definitely a people person. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. She loved meals with family and friends whether at her favorite Mexican restaurants or cooking at home (although eating out was the better option). She was always ready to go see a movie and looked forward to the annual Oscar presentations.

Cynthia enjoyed trout fishing, making annual pilgrimages with Bill to Lilley's Landing in Branson, Missouri, for more than 30 years. Her love of fishing may have started when she was 6 or 7 years old. After a day at Vacation Bible School, she pulled a wagon with a catfish in a bucket of water all the way home to show her Dad how proud she was of catching the fish. She was now hooked on fishing.

Cynthia and Bill took many memorable trips and cruises including New York City Broadway shows, a New England Fall Foliage tour, trips to Israel and Jamacia, and travels from Yellowstone Park to San Francisco to Galveston to the beaches of the Atlantic Ocean plus many points in-between. For many years, annual Christmas trips to Kansas City were a family tradition with shopping at the Country Club Plaza and visits with her cousins. She especially enjoyed a Winter week spent at the Woodstock Inn, in Woodstock, Vermont where she and Bill went "riding through the snow in a one-horse open sleigh".

She was a great listener, non-judgmental, offering sage advice whether it was requested or not.

At times, though, that advice was tough to hear; but it was always delivered out of her love for others. She probably missed her calling by not being a counselor.

While many people benefitted from her wisdom and advice, not everyone had the pleasure of witnessing her silly side; the side that occasionally snorted when she and her sister got insanely tickled about something only they could understand.

Cynthia Wiles was loved by many because she loved and respected everyone. It is a lesson we should all remember to practice.

Cynthia was preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Marjorie Ashcraft, mother-in-law Pauline Wiles, sister-in-law Millicent Ashcraft, her paternal grandparents, Charles and Faye Ashcraft (Osage City, Kansas), and her maternal grandparents, Rev. Nelson and Nettie King (Columbus, Kansas).

Cynthia is survived by her husband, William (Bill) Wiles (Tulsa, OK), daughter and son-in-law, Kelli and Tony Casteel (Bixby, OK), granddaughter, Kourtney King (Bixby, OK), brother Mark Ashcraft (Arlington, TX), sister and brother-in-law Janet and Roger Jamison (Broken Arrow, OK), and brother-in-law Jon Wiles (Philippians). She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, cousins and longtime friends whom she deeply cherished.
