Obituary

Doris D. Westfield passed away March 27, 2019 at St. Francis Hospital in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Doris was born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1932 to Marion Sprague Davis and Richard Davis, Jr. She graduated from Wilmington High School in 1950. Doris was the first in her family to go to college, receiving a BS in Biology and Chemistry with minors in Education and Psychology from the University of Delaware, and a Master's Degree in Library and Information Science from Drexel University. Doris worked at several libraries across several areas. It was while working at the Library in Wilmington that she met Erich Westfield who proceeded to "take her out on his Library Card" and the rest is history - they were married in 1957 and raised wonderful boys, William Erich, and Kenneth Lee Westfield. Erich was transferred to New York where Doris became the librarian at Harborfields High School. There she expanded the two classroom library into a full Media Center with a TV Studio, Photography Lab, and a teaching program where sophomores learned about the resources available to them for class and personal work. In 1978, the family moved to Tulsa, where Doris volunteered on HELPLINE and Saint Francis Auxiliary before taking a position as Government Documents Librarian at the Tulsa City-County Library. She put government information into the online catalog for the first time, resulting in having a day in Oklahoma named for her on Sept. 30, 1998 by Governor Keating, and also an award for The Library, presented in Washington, DC. After retirement, she returned to volunteer work at Saint Francis Auxiliary, serving and chairing several different deparments, and was president of the Auxiliary from 2002-2003. She created and selected recipients of the Eri-Aly Scholarship that ran from 2001-2006. Doris and Erich enjoyed traveling and visited many places including England, France, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, Barbados, Dominican Republic, Austria, Belgium, Hawaii, and Israel. After a long search, Erich and Doris moved into the University Village retirement community, where they were able to make changes to accommodate their dog and cat, and appreciated the availability of quick assistance from maintenance and household help. The made many new friends, and enjoyed group activities such as bridge and Wii Bowling.  It was a move they never regretted. The family wants to thank the staff at University Village and her physicians, Dr. Donald Higgins and Dr. Gregory Hill for their care over many years. Doris was predeceased by her husband Erich in 2015, and is survived by Bill Westfield and his wife Mary Ann, grandchildren: Alyssa, Nathan and Gabrielle A. Westfield of Atherton California, and Kenneth Westfield and his wife Debra, grandchildren: Erich A., Michael, and Gabrielle L. Westfield. Memorial Services will be held Friday, April 26, 2019, at 3pm, at the University Village Auditorium, 8555 South Lewis Avenue, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Legacy Touch Code: DNHH4WRA
