Dwight M. Dailey was born June 6, 1923 and passed away on March 28, 2017 at the age of 93. He grew up in Coldwater, Michigan where he was inducted into the Coldwater H.S. Music Hall of Fame in 2010. Dwight graduated from the University of Michigan with a BME and MM degrees in music. He felt his calling in life was to teach and play music and was an extraordinary teacher, clarinetist and saxophonist. Dwight loved jazz and classical music. When he was accepted as an Assistant Band Director in 1946 with the late Roger Finn at the University of Tulsa he also played first clarinet in the Tulsa Philharmonic and sax with a couple of dance bands. Dr. Revelli hired Dwight to fill the first full-time saxophone position at The University of Michigan and he returned to Ann Arbor where he was a frequent soloist with the Band and played first clarinet with the Plymouth Michigan Symphony. After five years in Michigan he returned to Tulsa as the Band Director at The University of Tulsa a position he held for 17 years. He also played principal clarinet in the Tulsa Philharmonic, Tulsa Ballet, and the Tulsa Opera for nearly 30 years. The late Franco Autori chose Dwight as Assistant Conductor of the Philharmonic in the late sixties, and he served as Resident Conductor from 1971-1974. Dwight was a member of the University of Tulsa faculty for 37 years. He was made a Professor of Instrumental Music in 1971 an appointed Emeritus Professor of Music in 1991. He had a long professional career and many very successful students. Dwight was inducted into the Oklahoma Bandmasters Hall of Fame and received the prestigious award of T.U.'s Mr. Homecoming in 1987. Shortly before he retired from T.U. he took over the Tulsa Community Band which he led for 25 years joined by his good friend Paris York. He volunteered at the Tulsa Zoo as a Wild Bunch member for 12 years. He and his wife Jan loved to play tennis, bike, hike, and travel the world. He is preceded in death by his parents Leslie and Lucena Pearl Dailey and daughter Deborah Jean Tomlinson. Survivors include wife Janet C. Dailey of Tulsa, granddaughter Tiffanie Tomlinson Brinson and husband Robert, Garner NC, grandson Trent Tomlinson, Beggs, OK, stepdaughter Linda Timmons and husband Tim, Olathe KS, stepgrandson Jeff Timmons, Olathe, KS, step granddaughter Emily Timmons Wurtenberger and husband Andy, Olathe, KS and many great great grandchildren. Also brothers and sisters-in-law John and Carolyn Coffey, Okla. City, niece Casey Coffey Vineyard, Norman, OK, Joe and Bonnie Coffey, Boulder, CO, nephew Ben Coffey, Columbus, OH, and nephew David Coffey, Swannanoa, NC. We wish to thank the Benedictine Sisters of Monte Cassino for all their help with the Tulsa Community Band, Mary and Karen and their fine student staff at the Collins Fitness Center, Interim Hospice and our wonderful neighbors for their great help at the end of his life.
