In Loving Memory of Elaine Cencel

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Elaine Cencel, an extraordinary individual who graced this world with her magnificent voice, unwavering elegance, and profound love for life. On January 28th, 2024, she joined our Father in Heaven, leaving behind a legacy that will forever resonate in the hearts of those who were touched by her presence.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Martha Cencel of Pueblo, CO, her brother Joseph Arthur "Art" Cencel of Newport Beach, CA, and her eldest daughter Simone Kilian Fox. She is survived by her youngest daughter Suzanne Owens and son-in-law James Owens of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.

Born in Salida, Colorado, Elaine spent her formative years in Pueblo, where her parents cultivated a foundation of love and passion for the arts. After earning a Master of Arts degree from UCLA, she embarked on an illustrious opera career in Europe, gracing the stages of some of the world's most enchanting opera houses.

Elaine's journey took a transformative turn when she chose to channel her vocal prowess into education, prioritizing the safety and stability of her two children. With thoughtful consideration, she made Fayetteville, Arkansas, her home, a decision that shaped the next 40+ years of her life as a distinguished Professor of Voice at the University of Arkansas.

Her influence extended far beyond the classroom. Elaine continued to enchant audiences around the globe, judging key performances and leaving an indelible mark on the world of opera. Her powerful and beautiful voice brought joy to all who had the privilege of experiencing it.

In her later years, Elaine relished a well-deserved retirement, enveloped in the company of her devoted daughters who returned to Fayetteville, creating a haven by her side. The significance of family warmth became paramount when illness touched the life of her beloved daughter, Simone Kilian Fox.

Undeterred by life's adversities, Elaine's resilience shone through. In her closing chapters, she relocated with her daughter Suzanne and son-in-law James to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, where she found comfort and tranquility.

True to her vibrant spirit, Elaine requested not a funeral or memorial service but a celebration of her life. Details will be shared with close family and friends once finalized. Though she is no longer with us, Elaine's legacy will endure through the lives of her friends, family, and the countless students she mentored, many of whom went on to achieve remarkable success in the world of opera.

Elaine Cencel will be dearly missed, but her legacy will continue to inspire and resonate for generations to come.
