IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Florence
Carey
October 24, 1931 – February 10, 2024
Florence Tietz Carey, 92, died February 10, 2024, in Tulsa. She was born October 24, 1931, to Harrison and Loraine (Flint) Tietz in Bellefonte, PA. She graduated from State College High, State College, PA in 1949. She then attended Penn State where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. During that time she met Jim Carey, whom she married on September 8, 1951. They moved to Boston, MA and she finished her studies at Boston University, graduating with a BS in Communications.
Flossie, as she was known, worked as assistant PR director at Tufts College in Boston until their first son, Jim, was born. A move to Park Forest, IL came soon after that, as did sons Pete and David. Husband Jim's subsequent transfers with Gulf Oil took the family to Arlington Heights, IL, Tulsa, OK, Atlanta, GA, Pittsburgh, PA, and Houston, TX. Throughout this time Flossie devoted herself to being a loving wife and mom, still finding time to serve and be active in church, hospital auxiliaries, hospice, and museums as the boys grew up and moved away. In Houston she started a 10-year stint as a sales rep for photo supplies, frames, and albums.
Jim took early retirement from Chevron (who had acquired Gulf) and he and Flossie moved to New Braunfels, TX in 1986. She became involved in church and community while Jim took a job with a company in nearby San Antonio. He retired for good in 1992 and in 1999 they moved back to Tulsa. They joined Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian Church where she quickly found a home in a Circle, small groups, Reading Partners, and Bible studies. She was also active with Gilcrease Museum, PEO, Kappa alumni, Town Hall, and caring for her much-loved dog, Max. She stayed busy and independent following husband Jim's passing in 2014.
Over the years, Flossie enjoyed sewing, playing bridge, traveling, reading, watching football, and cooking – she was feeding groups of family and friends right to the end. She was known for her warmth and her great and constant smile – both indicative of her strong Christian faith and her eagerness to serve the Lord by serving others.
Flossie is survived by her sons; Jim and his wife Jill of Tulsa, Pete, of Tulsa, and David and his wife Linda of Austin, TX, as well as six grandchildren, four great grandchildren and her sister, Betsy of Myrtle Beach, SC. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Jim.
A memorial service is set for 1:00 pm on Saturday, February 24, at Kirk of the Hills. In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation to Kirk of the Hills https://thekirk.com/give/ or Mend Medical Services https://mendmedical.org/give/ .
