Obituary

Harold Leroy Baker, Jr., 89, was born on March 11, 1924 in Apperson, Okla., Osage County, Township of Bighill (an oil town that no longer exists). He was the sixth childto Ollie Mae Purcell Baker and Harold Leroy Baker, Sr. He passed away on Feb. 10, 2014 after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Harold was called Jr. by his family and was the youngest of the children. His family settled in Oklahoma City and in 1941 at age 17 Harold joined the US Navyand served as an electrician's mate on the bbattleship USS Colorado. He saw combat in the Pacific theater and in October of 1945 he was honorably discharged. In March of 1949 Harold married Margaret Imogene (Jean) Magee and they settled inHouston, TX. In 1949 a son, Eddie Harold, was born. The family moved to Oklahoma City and in 1951, a daughter, Lynda Margaret, was born. Harold was an electrician by trade and was a 62 year member of the IBEW. His passions were fast boats; fishing, OU sports, building and flying radio controlled airplanes, being a purple martin enthusiast/landlord and at retirement took up snow skiing with his daughter. For many years, until a knee injury sidelined him, he made annual trips to the mountains of Colorado for ski trips with his daughter and her friends. He was an animal lover and over the years a dog-dad to German ShepherdsJuree, Gretchen and Lucky. While working in Tulsa he met a lovely lady, Neva Tolson and love bloomed. They were married in April of 1982 and an extended family was born adding Neva's two children, 3 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and many siblings and cousins to the family. Harold gained a stepson, James Michael (Mike) and Karla Tolson who reside in Hilliard, Ohio and a stepdaughter Georgann and Eddie Ward who reside in Oklahoma City. After retirement Harold and Neva took up residence at the Veterans Colony outside of Wilburton, OK. During the 26 years they lived there they were active in the colony politics and community activities and took advantage of the nearby lakes for many fishing trips. Harold was a member if the Kiamichi Remote Control Flying Club and logged many hours flying his planes. That is also where he became interested in purple martin culture and devoted considerable time and energy to maintaining a large number of Martin houses each spring. He owned a 1948 4N Ford tractor that was a prized possession. He used it to move stuff around on the colony property where they lived and was known to hitch it to a trailer in the fall for hayrides around the colony. In 2006 Harold's failing health dictated a move to Owasso, OK to be closer to family.Harold is survived by his wife Neva, his son Eddie Baker (Connie) of Lawton, OK, daughter Lynda Marr of Owasso, OK, grandchildren Trinity Nicole Baker, Travis Baker and Tracey Baker (Heidi). Mike Tolson (Karla), Georgann Ward (Eddie), grandchildren Jason Ogilbee (Lisa), Jonathan Tolson (Lisa), and Laurie Zsom.
