Harold Merlin Dunn was born on May 5, 1922 in Illmo Missouri to Harvey and Aureola Dunn. He passed away on Thursday July 8, 2022 at University Village Retirement Community. Mr. Dunn had just celebrated his 100th birthday on May 5, 2022 and was able to enjoy a wonderful celebration with his family to mark the occasion.
Harold served in the Army during World War II. In 1938, he joined the Missouri National Guard's 140th Infantry Regiment. He was later drafted into the Army and sent to California. He soon volunteered for pilot training, and received his wings on January 3, 1943. He was commissioned a Flight Officer, a rank equivalent to a Warrant Officer 1. He was shipped to England and assigned to the 367th Bombardment Squadron, 306th Bombardment Group, "Reich Wreckers", Eighth Air Force, based at Thurleigh, west of London. On June 2, 1943 he was shot down over Germany and spent approximately 22 months in various German prison camps. Then on April 29, 1945, the 14th Armored Division of General Patton's Third Army liberated his camp and he returned home.
That same year, he met and married Francis Emma Jean Gregg of Parma Missouri on December 26, 1945. They were married just short of 72 years and had three children Wyatt, Gregg, and Sherrie. Wyatt and spouse Sherry reside in Carrollton Texas and have two daughters Sara and Sally of Dallas Texas. Gregg resides in Missouri and Sherrie and spouse Ken, reside in Mannford OK and have two children; Stephen and wife Brianna of Sand Springs Oklahoma, and daughter Valerie and husband Jacob Casto and their daughter Emma Jean of Pueblo Colorado.
Harold was an avid reader. He enjoyed reading National Geographic, historic biographies and western novels, especially Zane Grey and Louis L'Amour. He loved fishing, hunting and being outdoors.
Interment will be at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield Missouri on Friday August 5, 2022 at 10 a.m. A Memorial service will be held at University Village on Saturday August 6, 2022 at 10 a.m. In place of flowers, we ask that donations be made to Disabled American Veterans at DAV.org.
