Obituary

Harriet Norma (Garner) Jensen, longtime resident of Tulsa, passed away February 10, 2023, just shy of her 93rd birthday. She was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, William Gene "Bill" Jensen. She is survived by her children: Nickie Jensen Burns and Doug, of Norman, OK; Norman Jensen and Sandra, of Tulsa; Paul Jensen and Jeffery Donaldson of Tulsa; and Anne Jensen Lee and Nathan, of Stillwater, OK. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Eric and Snow Burns, Whitney (Burns) and Tom Willard, Jason Jensen, William Jensen and Chrystal, Brittany Lee, and Nicholas Lee. Also, her great-children: Calvin Burns, Camille Burns, Weston Willard, Charley Willard, Alexander Jensen, Aurora Jensen, and Jaxon Davidson. In addition, she is survived her brother, Eugene Garner of Richmond, VA.

A Southern girl at heart, she was born February 24,1930, to Harry and Ethelyn (Lewis) Garner in Richmond, Virginia, and was raised in Farmville, Virginia. She attended nursing school not far from her home town, but didn't finish because she couldn't handle the suffering. She met the man of her dreams while he was in the U.S. Army, stationed at Camp Pickett, Virginia The way they tell it, she was hanging out at the local airport, and while there, she happened to meet her handsome young pilot and he took her flying, which seemed to seal the deal. They were married September 8,1951, in a minister's study, just before he shipped out to Korea.

She raised four children on a shoestring budget, and could stretch a dollar til it hollered. A lover of learning, she began taking college courses after her kids were grown, including classes about Shakespeare and art. She loved all types of music and loved to sing, especially duets with Bill at church. She also sang with the Sweet Adelines, Vintage Voices, and various choirs over the years. She loved to cook and garden, and was ahead of her time as far as healthy eating was concerned. She also loved to knit and crochet, and was an avid reader. She was a longtime member of All Soul's Unitarian Church, helping and contributing wherever she could. She also volunteered at Philbrook Museum of Art, ultimately training to become a docent.

We cannot talk about Harriet without mentioning her temper, which was legendary. Bill like to describe her as "passionate", and she always kept everyone on their toes. However, she was completely devoted to Bill and had a lively sense of humor. She loved nothing more than being in the kitchen with her family, and one of her favorite expressions, which sums her up perfectly, was: "I cook with wine, sometimes I even add it to the food." We will miss her sense of mischief, her wit, and her joie de vivre more than we can say.

There will be a Celebration of Life at a later date. She loved flowers, and would get such a kick out of any kind of donation to the All Soul's Unitarian Church Garden.
