James Robertson Carey III, 86, died March 4, 2014 in Tulsa. He was born September 11, 1927 to Hampson and Claudia (Heard) Carey in Sewickley, PA. He attended Sewickley and Glen Osborne Schools, graduating from Mt. Lebanon High School in 1945. After service in the Navy, he attended Penn State. While there, he met his wife-to-be, Florence Tietz, and affiliated with Tau Kappa Epsilon Fraternity. Both connections lasted a lifetime. Following graduation in 1950, he was employed by Gulf Oil Corp. and was sent to New York for training. He and Florence (known to friends as Flossie) were married September 8, 1951 in State College, PA. Together, they transferred to Boston, Chicago, Tulsa, Atlanta, Pittsburgh and Houston, all with Gulf. In the intervening years they had 3 sons: James R.,IV, Peter H., and David H. After Gulf was acquired by Chevron, Jim took early retirement after 36 years. Six months later he took a job in San Antonio, TX with a long distance telephone carrier. He and Florence then moved to New Braunfels, TX for 13 years. Jim retired again in 1992 at age 65. He and Flossie moved to Tulsa in 1999 where they became members of the Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian Church. Jims outside activities have included time as an assistant scoutmaster, membership in the Lions Club, and instruction of Beginning Internet for the Tulsa City-County Library. In addition to Flossie, he is survived by his sons, James R. and his wife Jill of Tulsa, and their daughter, Lindsay; son Peter H. of Tulsa, and his children, Chas and Caroline; and by son David H. and his wife, Linda, of Austin, TX, and their sons Tim, Will and John. Jim was preceded in death by both parents and by an older sister, Catharine Carey Murdock. A younger sister, Louise Carey Kylander, lives in Naples, FL with her husband, Dr. Walter C. Kylander. Services are set for 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 8 at Kirk of The Hills. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Scholarship Fund of Presbyterian Women of the Kirk or to a charity of your choice.
