Obituary

James L. Chambers (Jim) was born in Vinita, Oklahoma on January 13, 1938 to Orpha Mae and Luther R. Chambers. Jim spent the first years of his life in Big Cabin, Oklahoma until the passing of his mother in 1943. In 1945 his father remarried and relocated the family to Miami, Oklahoma. Jim worked part time at a local pharmacy as a soda jerk while attending high school, and joined the National Guard after graduation. He attended Northeastern Oklahoma University for one year before enlisting in the US Army and serving three years in Germany. Upon concluding his service to his country, he returned to the states and found employment in Tulsa at Standard Industries. Shortly after, he moved back to Miami and acquired employment at the B.F. Goodrich Tire Plant while seeking his degree in business from Kansas State University. His step-sister, Geneva, introduced him to her college roommate (and his future bride of 51 years) in 1961. Jim and Sharon were married in Pittsburg, Kansas on June 15th, 1963. After Jim earned his degree, the family moved to Tulsa where he went to work as an accountant for Skelly Oil Company. He spent the remainder of his career in accounting and auditing for the oil industry, retiring from Texaco in 1994. Jim and Sharon had two children, Stephanie and James Stephan (Steve). Jim enjoyed the outdoors and took the family on frequent vacations to the mountains of Colorado. He loved taking the family horseback riding, fishing, and on nature hikes through the mountains to feed the squirrels. He was active with Steve in the Boy Scouts of America as an Assistant Scoutmaster, where he enjoyed camping and backpacking trips with Troop 22. He was also active in Steves youth soccer league as an Assistant Coach for several seasons. In 1993, Jim and Sharon joined Yale Avenue Christian Church, where Jim "claimed" part of the Church grounds as his to maintain and manicure. He volunteered his lawn service there until his health forced him to relinquish his duties. He was known for his love of his Church family, and was often late for service because he was in the foyer chatting with friends. He had a friendly spirit and made friends everywhere he went. Even during hospital stays, he never let his personal situation or discomfort spoil the chance to find a new friend. Jim had two grandsons, Jasper and Dresden, who were the light of his life. He loved getting hugs from the boys, taking them for rides on his scooter, and watching them play and grow. He passed on his patriotism and love for the American Flag to both boys, and he beamed with pride at every opportunity he had to brag about them. Jim passed away peacefully in his sleep on January 21st, 2015. He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Patsy Chambers and Barbara Porter, brothers Ron and Clark Chambers, and step-sister Geneva Lance. He is survived by his wife, Sharon, children Stephanie Huston and Steve Chambers, siblings Beth Griswold and Phil Chambers, and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at Yale Avenue Christian Church on February 4, 2015, at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, Jims family asks that you make a donation to the charitable organization of your choice. Service: 02/04/2015 00:00 10:00 AM Yale Avenue Christian Church
