Jim was born November 14, 1931 in Tulsa to Otho and Roberta (Potter) Steinberg. He graduated from Central High School in Tulsa and attended Drury University, Springfield, Missouri where earned his Bachelor of Arts in Art and was a member of the Kappa Alpha fraternity. On October 7, 1955 he married Sondra Jean Gross in Tulsa. A talented artist, Jim worked as a commercial artist for McCormick Armstrong Co., as a draftsman and illustrator for North American Rockwell in Wichita, Kansas and for 21 years as a technical illustrator at Amoco Production Co., in Tulsa where he was an early user of computer-aided graphics systems in the mini-computer era. Jim was an avid model aviation hobbyist for over 60 years building and competing with control-line, free-flight, and radio-controlled models with the Tulsa Glue Dobbers and Turf Flyers. In later years Jim enjoyed building and flying radio-controlled antique models with the Sooner Chapter of the Society of Antique Modelers (SAM 93). In mid-life, Jim pursued varied interests such as cycling with the Tulsa Bicycle Club, participating in the Freewheel ride across Oklahoma several times as well as holding an Amateur Radio License under call sign WB5YUD.
