Jean graduated from Prince of Wales College, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada, with a degree in nursing in 1939. Jean was very active in many activities with nursing, church and was once part of a winning Curling team. In September 1956 Bruce and Jean moved with their family from Amherst, Nova Scotia, Canada to Dothan Alabama where Bruce established a new medical practice and where they lived until 1962. The family moved to St. Louis, Missouri where he studied psychiatry. After several years of practicing psychiatry in Galesburg and Macomb, Illinois and Tuscaloosa, Alabama they moved to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Having spent many years raising her family and being involved with their many activities Jean was not ready for retirement and went to work as a nursing supervisor at Beach Grove Hospital in Charlottetown, retiring in 1982. After retirement she audited a number of courses at the University of Prince Edward Island, was very involved with the local Senior Center where she published their newsletter, performed in their annual variety show and worked in their office. Jean was an avid swimmer and ice skater into her late 70's often winning swimming awards at the local athletic club. Jean was very active with Trinity United Church, Charlottetown, PEI and was in charge of the kitchen for several years (including making purchases of equipment and supplies), worked on all church fundraisers, sang in the choir and was proud to serve as an ordained Elder. Jean moved to Tulsa, OK in the fall of 1996 to be closer to immediate family. In Tulsa Jean joined Southminster Presbyterian Church, dedicating numerous hours to various committees. Jean arranged the sanctuary decorating annually for the Easter service for many years, worked on the newsletter until it went electronic and often worked in the office to fill in when needed; she may or may not have occasionally hung up on callers. Although unable to sit through both Sunday school and Church, the last year she attended Sunday school faithfully, and loved the thought provoking discussions with her class. Jean attended Sunday school the morning before being admitted to the hospital. She volunteered with Emergency Infant Services of Tulsa for many years and enjoyed sorting clothes, doing inventory, helping the parents pick out items and Jean also maintained reports of donations. Jean also knit many baby caps that were donated to the church and EIS. She was awarded two honorary Jaycee awards, having participated in many Jaycee activities with daughter Karen who remains active as a Junior Chamber of Commerce International Vice President. Jean truly had a servant's heart. Jean was loved by all whose lives she touched. She was smart, funny, and very involved with loving life and active until the end. Jean loved to travel and traveled extensively across Canada and the U.S as well as an extended trip to Scotland, France England many years ago with daughter Bea. The last several years she took some memorable trips. In 2012 Jean and her daughters Heather and Karen took a two week tour of Nova Scotia, Canada. Jean was able to show the babies' where she was born and grew up, where they were born, where the family lived before moving to the United States. The trip also included an amazing whale watching excursion where they followed a pod of whales for over an hour who put on quite a show and even swam under the boat. In 2013 Jean and son Ian and daughter Karen flew to Seattle Washington to visit daughter Margo and her husband John, and grandson Neal. Jean, Ian, Karen and Neal took a side trip to Vancouver, Whistler and Victoria, British Columbia, where they visited with granddaughter Crystal and great grandson Brady. After Christmas 2013 Jean, Heather and Karen flew to Las Vegas to spend a week with Daughter Margo and her husband John in Golden Valley Arizona. While on this trip, Jean, Margo, Heather and Karen took an amazing trip to the Grand Canyon West Rim, walked on the Skywalk over the Grand Canyon, and Jean was presented a hand painted stone with a blessing from 'Warrior' Chief Stillstanding; Chief with the Hualapai tribe, wrote 96 years old on the stone and Jean loved it. Jean traveled to Prince Edward Island in August of this year for a family reunion and a celebration of her 97th birthday and was surrounded by all her children and many adoring relatives. Jean was the last remaining from her generation and was the beloved Matriarch of the MacCannell family. Jean suffered a massive heart attack on Sunday, August 31. Jean was alert and aware immediately after having stents put in, and was able to speak to her sons David Ian on the telephone the next day. Jean passed at 6:22 am September 2nd with her daughters Bea, Heather and Karen at her side. The family is eternally grateful to the incredible, compassionate support from the amazing doctors, cardiovascular specialists, ER Staff, and the ICU nurses and staff at Oklahoma State University Medical Center in Tulsa. Jean was cremated per her wishes, and the family is very appreciative of the way she was treated with dignity and respect. Thank you to Marianna Blackwell and the staff at Butler-Stumpff Funeral Home and Crematory in Tulsa for helping us. Jean will be missed by many. She has been described by friends and family as one of the remaining few who grew up with grace, etiquette and class; intelligent, extraordinary, kind, lived life to the fullest, loved with all her heart and the best mom, sister, mother-in-law, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend any one could hope for. One of her last statements was "Ive had a wonderful life." She did, 97 years of it. A memorial is being planned for 2015 in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island.
