Jerry R. Carlton 1937 ~ 2014 Shawnee native, Jerry R. Carlton, always had athletics in his soul. The winner of the Kiwanis Little Olympics Gold Track Shoe and Jefferson Baseball YMCA State Championship, Carlton went on to become a stand-out athlete at Shawnee High School, lettering in football, basketball, baseball and track. Following his dreams he went on to Northeastern Oklahoma College (NEO) in Miami on a football scholarship and finished his undergraduate studies on a football scholarship at Southeastern State University in Durant. Returning to his alma mater, Shawnee High, he coached football, basketball and baseball until moving to Pawnee andChickasha and finally Rose State College to further his coaching career. Exiting athletics after a 17 year career, Carlton became Vice President of Operations for Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Oklahoma with offices in both Oklahoma City and Tulsa. Ultimately, Carlton received graduate training and advanced state and national certification in substance abuse counseling and management. He retired from this field in 2003 after heading Oklahomas largest substance abuse facility, 12 12, located in Tulsa. Carlton and his wife, Marilyn, have lived in Tulsa for many years. His daughter, Terri, was a middle school teacher in Edmond before recently moving with her family to Bethany. His son-in-law Terry Evans is the head mens basketball coach at UCO, Edmond. Following in the footsteps of their grandfather, granddaughter Carli Wester attended OU on a track and field scholarship and currently coaches in Deer Creek Public Schools. Her brother, Tre Evans, a junior at Putnum City West is a basketball stand-out. Granddaughter, Brandi and her husband Derek are the parents of Carltons two great grandsons who also enjoy sports. Son, Craig Carlton, and his wife, Aine, live in Santa Fe where he manages a sports and outdoor motor vehicle company. In retirement, Carlton was content as a sports spectator. A Cardinal Baseball fan and staunch OU supporter, he most enjoyed watching his grandson carrying on his sports legacy. Memorial services will be held 2:00pm, Saturday, December 27th at the First Christian Church Chapel, 913 South Boulder Avenue. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Humane Society of Tulsa.
