Jerry Wayne Henry died Tuesday, December 11, 2018, surrounded by his family. Jerry was born in Wink, Texas, to Wayne Clark Henry and Rossie Ruth Kelly Henry on June 16, 1938. He spent his childhood in Lewisville, Arkansas, and moved with his family to Tulsa as a young teenager, in 1952. He attended Central High School in Tulsa where he was graduated in 1956. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Tulsa.
Jerry spent the bulk of his career as Publications Manager at the Society of Exploration Geophysicists. After his retirement, he continued working for them as a copy editor.
Jerry gave many hours as a volunteer in the community. He was a Big Brother, read to children at various schools, and drove cancer patients to their treatments. He and his wife, Nancy, traveled widely. In addition to nearly every state, they visited Canada, Mexico, various countries in Europe, Russia, China, and Egypt. His love of reading and life-long learning was passed on to his three children. Music was a special passion: opera, the symphony, and especially ballet. Athletic all his life, he played tennis and golf regularly up to the time that his health declined. He was an avid and knowledgeable sports fan, supporting TU teams particularly.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother-in-law, Robert W. Holloway. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nancy Holloway Henry, of the home; his brother Philip Darrell Henry; his children, Rebecca Jones (Ken), Paul Henry, and Miriam Overgaard (Tom), all of Tulsa; his grandchildren, Lois Jones Cheek and Erik Overgaard; two great-grandchildren; sisters- and brothers-in-law, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Memorial gifts may be made to the University of Tulsa, Department of Philosophy and Religion.
A Celebration of Life service will be held at Hope Unitarian Church on Tuesday, December 18, at 3:00 pm.
