Obituary

Jill Marian Holmes, 81, died June 20, 2022, at the Golden Oaks Assisted Living Center in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The Cremation Society of Oklahoma is in charge of interment in the family plot at Fairlawn Cemetery. Ms. Holmes requested that no service be held. She was born November 30, 1940, in Tulsa, Oklahoma to Cyril and Viola (Lacher) Holmes. She spent her childhood in Richland, WA and Tulsa. She attended Tulsa Central and graduated from Highland Park High School in Dallas. After attending Hendrix College and S.M.U., Jill graduated in 1961 from North Texas State University with a B.S. in Elementary Education. She earned a Master of Library Sciences at Texas Women's University in 1963, and a B.A. in German from OSU in 1980. Jill began work at the OSU Library in 1963. From 1965-67, she worked as a U.S. Army Special Services Librarian at Ulm and Munich, Germany. She then returned to OSU as a Social Sciences Librarian and served until her retirement in 1992. From 1981-1990 she wrote the column "New and Forthcoming at Reference' for EDUCATION LIBRARIES, journal of the Education Division of the Special Library Association. She was a member of various organizations including American Library Association, National Education Association, National Organization of Women, Ocean Conservancy, Southern Poverty Law Center, and the 1801 Society at Oaks Indian Mission. In honor of her parents, Jill established endowed scholarships for American Indian and African-American undergraduate students at OSU, Pittsburgh (KS) State University, and Hendrix College. In honor of her grandparents, she established the Lacher-Schroer & Holmes-Kelsey Endowment at the U.S. Fund for UNICEF. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents and is survived by numerous cousins. Memorials may be made to the Mission of Hope homeless shelter, 1804 S.
