John W. Harker, 57, attorney, passed away after a year-long struggle with cancer. Jack was a passionate friend for the underdog, having volunteered for TARC, a Tulsa-based advocacy group for persons with developmental disabilities. He carried that passion into his immigration law practice, gaining the respect of the large Zomi community of immigrants from Myanmar, for whom he provided low-cost services, as well as providing family and business immigration services for clients from around the World. He was an active participant in the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA). Jack loved sailing, the ocean, floating in water, history, travel, hiking, skiing, Labrador retrievers and St. Bernard dogs, cooking (the Saturday morning trio of Lidia, Martha and Cook's Country was a weekly appointment), fine dining, science, astronomy, and reading. His encyclopedic knowledge never ceased to amaze his friends. During his final years, he was thrilled to visit Mexico, Peru, England, Italy, Spain and China. He is survived by his mother, Ann; spouse, Martin; brothers and sisters in law, Mike and Janell, Patrick and Paula, David and Jana, and Tony; and numerous nephews and other family members. He was preceded in death by his father, Bill, exactly one month to the day of his own death. In addition to family, he wanted to thank his special friends who sacrificed their time to provide him comfort during many hospital stays, including Virginia Harrison, Cynthia Jones, David Smock, Tom Young, and Elizabeth Warren. Jack especially wanted to thank his long-time paralegal and friend, Maria Mattern, for her assistance both legally and personally. Now, Jack is living 'in a pineapple under the Sea,' where many adventures await him with Sponge Bob and the residents of Bikini Bottom. There is no memorial service, per his wishes. However, memorial contributions may be made to TARC, organizations that advocate for immigrant rights, or to a charity of your choice.
