Obituary

John Brooks Walton, Jr. (Brooks), 59, of Tulsa, Oklahoma, died on Sunday, February 23, 2014 surrounded by his family. Brooks was born on August 25, 1954 in Shawnee, Oklahoma to John and Mag Walton. He graduated from Central High School in 1972 and attended Oklahoma State University, where he graduated with a Bachelors degree in Secondary Education. On August 9, 1975, he married his high school sweetheart, Annie Gotwals. In 1979 and 1982 Brooks and Annie welcomed their two children, Meredith and Richard, into the world. Brooks spent his summer vacations with his children at Big Splash Water Park and Wauhillau Outing Club. A bond unlike any other existed between Brooks and his children; he was their hero. He never missed a sport or activity that they were involved in, and his strong support remained up to his passing. In 2007, Brooks welcomed his granddaughter, Lily, and they spent the next 6 years becoming best friends. Brooks taught for 35 years with the majority of his career at Skiatook High School teaching Social Studies. With his caring attitude and determination to give each student the desire to want to learn, Brooks brought history books to life. Laughter was a must in his classroom and his students never knew what "Mr. Walton" would do next. Brooks received many awards over the years, including Oklahoma Regional Teacher of the Year. The Skiatook community was dear to his heart and teaching was his passion. In addition to his teaching career, Brooks enjoyed anything Oklahoma State University-related, especially attending all the home Cowboy Basketball games with his mother, Mag. He also loved rock concerts and was a die-hard Chicago Cubs fan.
