John Milford Whitman, 88, passed away on Thursday, November 15. John was born in De Ridder, Louisiana on May 19th, 1924 to Nathaniel Amos Whitman and Bessie Boyd (Bourland) Whitman. John was a veteran of the United States Navy. He achieved his master's degree and went on to be a writer, volunteer coordinator, and a junior high and high school teacher, coach and principal. He spent many years working for Southern Baptist churches, missions and for the Illinois Baptist State Association. John is survived by his loving wife, Mary Ruth (Miller) Whitman, to whom he was married for 65 years. Also survived by his children: Vince Whitman, Martin Whitman, Lauren Whitman, Shelley Curtiss, and Gene Christianson; his two sisters Vera Lacy (Bob), Carmen Brumley (Jerry), and his brother, Kenneth Farris (Betty); as well as many nieces and nephews and other loving family members. John is preceded in death by his parents and two sisters. A Memorial Service is planned for a later date. Condolences may be sent through the guest book on this page.
