Obituary

Marianne was born in Topeka, Kansas to John Benjamin and Helene Pelletier Walker on August 31, 1924. She was preceded in death by her three older siblings, John Oliver; George Addison; and Jeanette Ray. Marianne is survived by her children, Michael James(Janna); S. Addison(Tee); John Clyde(Debra); and Robert Walker, and her grandchildren Amanda; Helen; Amy; and John Christopher. Her surviving great grandchildren are Benjamin, Mirah, Nathan, and Marianne. She also has several surviving nieces and nephew.

Marianne attended Topeka Public Schools including Polk Grade School, Crane Junior High School, and graduated from Topeka High School in 1942. She attended Stephen's College in Columbia, Missouri for two years and then continued classes at Washburn University in Topeka.

Marianne subsequently embarked on a career as a ready-wear buyer for the family owned Pelletier's Department Store in Topeka which necessitated many trips to the garment district of New York City. This afforded her the opportunity to see numerous Broadway shows and attend events which she thoroughly enjoyed. She was also employed as a travel agent for many years in both Topeka and Oklahoma City. Her final career was as a systems analyst for Security Benefit Life Insurance Company with retirement in 1989. She then struck out on her own and traveled for several years teaching the insurance systems that she had worked to develop.

After retiring from her insurance career, Marianne worked with The Friend's of the Topeka Public Library and served on the Topeka Public Library Board. She loved to read and enjoyed sharing good books with family and friends. She also loved to play bridge and was involved with several bridge clubs throughout her life. Marianne loved spending time with her family and friends. She was a scout leader for her young children for several years. She was also able to travel abroad to Holland, Hong Kong, Scotland, England, and Germany. She was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church of Topeka and spent many years volunteering for that organization.

At ninety years of age, Marianne moved from Topeka to Tulsa to be closer to family and became a member of the Inverness Retirement Community - initially in independent living and then finally in assisted living. She made many friends there and was involved in bridge and Rumicube.

She was a courageous and loving woman. She was bright , industrious, and maintained a wonderful sense of humor. She had an infectious smile that her friends and family adored- it would instantly warm your heart. We will all remember that smile forever.

Graveside services will be in Topeka, Kansas at a later date.

Donations may be made to the Covenant Inverness Benevolent Fund in Tulsa, Oklahoma; The Friends of the Topeka Public Library; or a charity of your choice.
