Obituary

Mary Wallace Warner, 89, died peacefully Thursday. Her large heart finally gave out after battling Dementia and Alzheimer's for several years. Mary was the daughter of Dr. Albert Wicken Wallace and Edith Marie Bregenzer. She was born in Cleveland, Ohio, and grew up at the Glen Springs Resort in Watkins Glen, NY, Miami Beach and Biloxi, FL. After WWII, the family moved to Tulsa and Mary graduated with the 1949 Class at Tulsa Central High School where she met Richard "Dick" Warner. Mary and Dick married while students at the University of Oklahoma where Mary was a member of Delta Delta Delta. She graduated with a degree in Deaf Education and returned to Tulsa while Dick served during the Korean War. The couple were married until Dick's death in 2009. Mary earned her MBA at Oklahoma City University in 1983. Mary volunteered her organizational and management skills throughout her lifetime. She served on the Tulsa School Board from 1969-1980 and was President of the Junior League of Tulsa from 1964-1966. Mary also served on the Board of the Carl Albert Junior College Foundation, Quartz Mountain Summer Arts Institute, Oklahoma Community Education Advisory Board, Tulsa Town Hall, National Community Education Association, Children's Medical Center, Tulsa Speech and Hearing Association, Tulsa Arts and Humanities Council, Tulsa Council of Campfire Girls, Tulsa Community Chest Womens' Auxiliary, Family and Children's Service, Tulsa Community Chest, Tulsa Garden Center and the Tulsa Red Cross Youth Volunteers. She had also served as a member of City-County Cable Television Advisory Commission, Governor's Commission on Deaf and Hearing Impaired, Tulsa Historical Society, Council on Learning Disabilities, Tulsa Community Service Council, Mayor's Committee for the Bicentennial, National Community Education Association, Southern Association of Children under Six, Oklahoma Association on Children Under Six, National Association for the Education of Young Children, Friends of Day Care, City of Tulsa Growth and Task Force, Southern Hills Country Club, All Souls Unitarian Church and as an honorary member of the Tulsa Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce. Mary's professional career included teaching Speech Reading and Auditory Training at the University of Tulsa in 1963, State of Oklahoma Board of Public Affairs, Managing Director of the Tulsa Philharmonic, educational sales and training of Apple Computers to school systems throughout Eastern Oklahoma and Arkansas, Education software sales for Random House, Midwest Marking Representative for Angeles Nursery Toys and as a Real Estate Agent. Mary received many awards in her life, but some of those most dear to her were the Distinguished Service Award from the National Community Education Association; Gulick Award from the National Campfire Girls; Outstanding School Board Member from the Tulsa Classroom Teachers Association, and the Central High School Hall of Fame. Mary loved technology and built her first computer in the 1970s. She loved traveling and made dozens of trips to Europe where she made even more friends and helped to expand the early childhood programs on the US Army bases. Her list of friends was endless including those from Bookies, and the Seed & Sod Garden Club. Mary's survivors include her son, Rick (Kathie) of Overland Park, KS, and daughter Betsy of Tulsa, OK; grandchildren Amy Salistean of Lincoln, NE; Andrew Warner (Jaime) of Overland Park, KS; five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her husband, Dick, her parents, and her younger sister, Louise Allis. The family wishes to thank Miller Hospice, her niece Laura Gubser, and Tarsha at The Grove Midtown for their loving care. At this time, no service is planned.
