IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Michael
Hopkins
September 26, 1944 – April 22, 2025
Dr. Mike Hopkins, a tireless advocate for individuals forced to live on the margins of
society, passed away, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, dedication, and
unwavering service to all beings.
A respected professor and longtime champion for disability rights, Dr. Hopkins served a variety of meaningful roles throughout Oklahoma and Arkansas. He was an essential part of creating the Oklahoma State University's Wellness Center, served as a Governor appointee to the Oklahoma Developmental Disabilities Council for several years, and was a professor at Oklahoma State University (Stillwater) and the University of Central
Oklahoma (Edmond). His influence extended beyond academia as he once served as the Oklahoma Democratic Chair, working to foster positive change and inclusion throughout the state.
Dr. Hopkins' advocacy was deeply rooted in his commitment to long-term care and
empowering individuals with disabilities. His work with Oklahoma People First further cemented his reputation as a leader who believed in dignity, equality, and opportunity for all.
Dr. Mike's adventurous spirit also led him to volunteer as a ranger at Rocky Mountain National Park, where he shared his love for the outdoors with others along side his wife, Linda Barry, and logged over 3,000 service hours (working "moose jams" on Trailridge Rd & caring for the backcountry rangers' horses). He found joy in serving and educating, whether in the wilderness or within the halls of education. Having worked closely with Governor George Nigh, Dr. Hopkins was a driving force in shaping policies that improved the lives of countless Oklahomans. His influence and dedication will remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. Dr. Mike Hopkins' legacy will continue to inspire those who fight for inclusion, justice,
and the empowerment of vulnerable communities. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
Dr. Mike is survived by his wife, Linda Barry of Tulsa; 2 siblings (Penny & Bob); former wife, Kelsey Hopkins (Bailes) then of Stillwater; 5 children (Kim, Taryn, Gabe, Mateal & bonus daughter, Chelsea); 2 son in laws (Olivier & Ceasar), 7 grandchildren (Cooper & Isabel; Ethan & Lucas; Ivan & Micah & bonus granddaughter, Mallory), and one 4 legged daughter, Abbie.🐾
Over his last 30 years, many beautiful memories were made in Grand Lake, Colorado. Bittersweet memories were also made during Dad's last four years of life in the Abbey at Montereau. I would like to thank the dedicated staff in the Abbey
as well as the LiveWell Hospice staff that cared well for our father.
Dad lived a beautifully imperfect life amid family, friends and all those that crossed his path throughout his diverse career endeavors across the states
of Oklahoma & Arkansas. I would like to thank Michelle Hoffman for writing his professional remembrance. And finally, end with lyrics from two songs for Dad—with all our love♥️:
"Go rest high upon the mountain, son your work on Earth is done. Go to Heaven a shoutin, Love for the Father & the Son."
(Vince Gill dedicated by Gabe Hopkins)
"He went wingin off to Heaven, Soul Satisfied" —Red Dirt Rangers
