Michael Andrew (Mike) Monroe, 78, of Tulsa, died on January 7, 2021 following surgery. He was born in Baltimore, MD on December 25, 1942, to Paul Shugert Monroe and Anna Elizabeth Ohlander. He grew up in Baltimore and enlisted in the Air Force shortly after graduating from Dundalk High School in 1961. He completed his education as an adult, earning hIs BA and MA in Criminal Justice Administration from the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond, OK. Mike and his first wife, Sharon Victoria Evans, were married from 1962 to 1978 and had two children. After twenty years of service Mike retired from the Air Force in 1982, where he had been a Special Agent - Air Force Office of Special Investigations. Shortly thereafter, he met his second wife, Myra Bivins Klingenberg, in Oklahoma City at the home of a mutual friend. They were married on January 7, 1984, and Mike became a step-dad to Myra's young son. Mike transitioned his career to the civilian world and worked several years for General Dynamics in industrial security and contract administration on classified aircraft programs. He also worked several years managing fraud detection and prevention programs for major credit card issuers prior to retiring a second time in 2001.
In retirement, Mike found his special calling. For companionship, he adopted a young female Doberman Pinscher and named her Morgen. As she grew out of her puppy stage, Mike realized she had an innate ability to understand human emotions and to connect with people, qualities that would make her a good therapy dog. So in January 2010, he and Morgen completed the lengthy process for a dog and handler to be evaluated and registered as a Therapy Dog Team. Over the next 8 years, they volunteered hundreds of hours providing comfort and support in retirement centers, long-term care and assisted living facilities, pre-schools, and the Tulsa City-County Library System. In 2013, Morgen was selected to be in the Tulsa County District Attorney's Special Dog Unit. The mission of the Court Dogs, as they are also called, is to support young children who are victims of abuse or who have witnessed violence, thus helping calm their anxiety and fear during pre-trial preparations and court testimony. Mike said many times that the volunteer work he and Morgen did with the Court Dogs was the most meaningful work he had done in his entire life.
In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by his brother, Paul Shugert Monroe, Jr; sister, Roberta Monroe Bechtel; and his two Doberman Fur Angels, Morgen and Maverick. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Myra; stepson, Bradley Klingenberg and wife, Barbara of Tulsa; granddaughters, Samantha Klingenberg and Jessica Klingenberg of Tulsa; sister, Greta Ann Monroe of Milwaukee, WI; son, Michael D.
