Mildred Holcombe Carroll of Stillwater, passed away on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at Saint Simeons Episcopal Home in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was 95 years old. Mildred was born August 6, 1917 in Stonewall, Oklahoma, and grew up in Ada, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Grace Stewart and Riley Lee Holcombe. Mildred graduated as an art major from the University of Oklahoma in 1940. She was a member of Chi Omega Sorority and served as President. Upon graduation she received the prestigious "Holmberg Painting Award" and a scholarship to study in Paris, France. Due to World War II, she instead attended Parsons Art School, also known the New York School of Fine and Applied Arts. While in NYC, She met and married Navy, 1st Lieutenant Arthur G. Carroll. Following his service in the Military, the couple established their permanent home in Stillwater, Oklahoma. While Arthur was professor of Botany and Plant Pathology at Oklahoma State University, Mildred continued her art work in water color, gauche, and clay work while raising her family of three children. Mildred was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, as well as, the "Grissom Gallery", and the "Stillwater Art Guild". A active member in the Episcopal Church, she was one of the founders of St. Andrews Episcopal Church art sale and exhibited her art for many years. Retiring to Cleveland, a short distance from Tulsa, Mildred and Art together built a home, along the Arkansas River where the beauty of the surrounding nature was reflected in their shared love of creating pottery and Mildreds watercolor paintings. Mildred is survived by, her son John Arthur Carroll and his wife Patti of Sand Springs, Oklahoma, Susan Carroll Hatch and her husband Daniel of Marstons Mills, Massachusetts, and Thomas George Carroll and his wife Betsy of Pensacola, Florida. She is also survived by her seven grandchildren; Cory, David, Micah, Leah, Lindsey, Anna, and Luke, and nine great-grandchildren.
