Obituary

Norman Edward Gainey walked on to be with his Creator on May 18th 2024 at Hillcrest Hospital. He was born August 13th 1956 at Hillcrest Hospital to E. Marion Gainey and Colleen Henry.

Norman was a true son of Green Country, growing up fishing, canoeing, and camping with the Boy Scouts and his family who were lifelong members of the Tulsa Camping and Canoe Club. He grew up going to his Cherokee family's farm in the Claremore area where they had gatherings and spent many summers.

He was a champion of Tulsa's public school integration efforts being amongst the first 10 students to volunteer to attend Booker T. Washington High School's magnet program graduating with the class of 1975. It was while attending Booker T. that he met the love of his life, Dana Livingston, on the Sheridan school bus.

Being an alumni of the University of Oklahoma was a huge part of his life. It was in Norman while they were students where his relationship with Dana blossomed and they enjoyed their time in the dorms at Cate Center with their best friend, Steve Simpson. He and Dana were married on August 11, 1979, in a joyous ceremony at Philbrook in Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Norman was put on this earth to be a dad to children Spencer and Mary Grace. He was a baseball coach spreading his love to kids from all walks of life and always supported his kids' activities. He shared his talents with the community as a teacher, enriching the lives of all the students he served. He later became a consummate sales professional serving organizations with

his positive attitude. His coworkers marveled at how he served his family. He was a constant support to his colleagues and clients. His advocacy for peace and justice saw him donate time and resources to Tulsa Day Center for the Homeless, Just Hope, and numerous local groups through his church.

Norman was a lifelong, second generation, member of College Hill Presbyterian Church. He was active as a Church Elder, Sunday school teacher, youth group leader, grill master, and perennial driver for the church's Pride Parade entry. As a youth he participated in mission bus trips, neighborhood outreach, and spent a pivotal summer in Youngstown, Ohio working with

impoverished families.

His love of family was strengthened through his Cherokee heritage. He was proceeded in death by his father Edward Marion

Gainey and mother, Colleen Lovely Henry, grandparents Duck and May Henry, Charles and Jesse Gainey, and great-grandparents Josiah Henry, who was a Cherokee Tribal Council member, and his wife Alice Buffington. He is survived by his loving wife Dana Livingston who dedicated the last five years to managing his home-hemodialysis treatments and intensive care. He is also survived by his son Spencer Gainey and spouse Barbara Moschovidis and daughter Mary Grace Johnson and her spouse Tade Johnson. He welcomed his first grandchild this past fall becoming a loving grandfather to Colleen Kathryn Johnson. He is also survived by his sister Cindy Fast of Bethel Park Pennsylvania, his brother Bruce Gainey and wife Donna of Tulsa and his many nieces and nephews.

His final resting place will be among his elders at the Henry-Wolfe Cherokee cemetery near the

Henry family allotment and farm.
