Paul D. Newsome left this life peacefully on April 10, 2013, surrounded by his wife of 67 years and his three sons. He was born in Whiteville, Tennessee, on March 30, 1925, the son of W.H. and Grace Newsome. Paul grew up in Whiteville until his family moved to Clarendon, Arkansas, in 1937 Paul led a Tom Sawyer-like life along the White River in Clarendon. After the outbreak of World War II Paul met his future wife, Greta, at the Merlux Theatre in Clarendon. They were married in 1946 and enjoyed 67 happy years together. Paul entered the Navy in 1943 and served in the South Pacific aboard an aircraft search ship, the USS Cook Inlet. Paul and Greta moved to Oklahoma in 1947 where he earned his BS degree from Oklahoma City University. Paul worked for the Department of Defense at Tinker Field in Oklahoma City where he designed aircraft maintenance systems for the Strategic Air Command. He retired after heart bypass surgery in 1977. Paul was dedicated to his family. In 1998 he and Greta moved to Tulsa to be close to their grandkids. He coached his sons' baseball teams for years and led the family on many camping trips to such places as Yellowstone National Park and trout-filled lakes in Washington. He and Greta traveled extensively in their RV after their kids were grown. They particularly enjoyed the Pacific Northwest because of grandkids there and the Rio Grande Valley because of the winter sun. Paul is survived by his sons, Mark (Barbara), of Bend, Oregon, Bill (Cathy), of Cranbrook, British Columbia and David (Amy) of Tulsa, and his sister, Hazel Catlett of Dallas. He had five grandchildren, two step-grandkids, and two great grandchildren, which he considered the reward for a life well lived. Condolences may be sent through the guestbook on this page.
