Obituary

Philip Marshall Comer, 69, of Sand Springs, died December 30th, after a lengthy illness. Philip was born on July 4, 1951, in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to Brock and Jeanne (Jones) Comer. Philip was a devout family man, and always put others before himself. He was a Christian, and lived a life of immense spirituality. Philip was a lover of music. Although his record collection might be one of the most eccentric of all time, singing Opera was his passion. He began his music career in 1966, at the age of fifteen, when he began serving as a music minister at First Assembly of God Church, in Sand Springs, Oklahoma. Throughout his career in church music, Philip touched countless lives with his leadership, and love of music. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Oklahoma Baptist University. He then attended the University of Oklahoma, for his graduate studies. While at OU, Philip won numerous awards, including Winner of the Oklahoma University Concerto auditions, and he won the prestigious Oklahoma Metropolitan Opera Auditions in 1981. He went on to the regional auditions, and placed second behind world renowned soprano, Leona Mitchell. When Charlotte asked him how it went, he proceeded to tell her that it went well, but if Mitchell didn't win, it was rigged. Following his heart, Philip turned his focus on his family. He continued his career in hospital administration, and served churches as a music minister. He was Purchasing Manager/Materials Manager at: Mission Hill Hospital in Shawnee, OK, Norman Regional Medical Center in Norman, OK, Presbyterian Hospital in Oklahoma City, and Hillcrest Medical Center, Tulsa, OK. Philip was preceded in death by his father, Brock, and daughter, Laura. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Charlotte, his three children, Carmen (Justin), Daniel (Lisa), Robin (Kent), Grandchildren, Meghan, Sophie, Aidan, Wyatt (Chelsea), Mason, Zac, Mother Jeanne Doyle, siblings, Kerry Clemons, Robin Sanders, and Jeff Comer. A family service will be held January 10th, at 2:00 p.m. at Sand Springs United Methodist Church. The service will be live streamed from Centenary United Methodist Church and Sand Springs United Methodist Church Facebook pages.
