Obituary

Ralph E. Harmon was born in Hutchinson, Kansas on April 28, 1928 to H.D. and Empo Harmon. He died in Tulsa on January 14, 2018. His family lived in Hutchinson until Ralph was nine years old, then moved to Springfield, Missouri where he lived until leaving for graduate school. After moving to Springfield, Ralph attended Springfield public schools and finished high school at Greenwood Laboratory School. His undergraduate work was completed at Southwest Missouri Teachers College (now Missouri State University). He then obtained an M.A. degree in economics from the University of Illinois. Upon completion of his graduate program he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Japan during the Korean War. After returning to the U.S. following his military service, he accepted a job with City Service Gas Company (now Citgo). His entire professional career was spent as a budget analyst with Citgo. In 1954 Ralph married Elva Anderson. They celebrated 62 years of marriage before Elvas death in February of 2017. Ralphs career took them to Kansas City, then Chicago, then Philadelphia, and finally to Tulsa where they have resided since 1967. Ralph and Elva had a keen interest in travel and spent their vacation time while working, traveling to foreign countries. They visited countries in every continent, with most of their travels in Europe. After they both retired they continued this international travel. Also after retirement they built a summer home in LaVeta, Colorado in the Spanish Peaks area. They hosted many friends and family members for vacation getaways in this summer home. Elva and Ralph, quietly and mostly anonymously, were generous donors to several local charities and they endowed five scholarships at their alma mater, Missouri State University. Ralph is survived by one cousin, Judy Parizek; a sister-in-law, Nancy Anderson; and, thirteen nieces and nephews, Judith Smith, Gail Carroll, Sandy Burrell, Stan Cozad, Libby Marion, Bobbi Weiss, Bruce Cozad, Sara Riekof, Don Howell, Dan Howell, Sherry Lange, Brenda Williams, and Cathy Spargo. The family wishes to thank the staff of Inverness Village Skilled Nursing, who had been caring for Ralph since November of 2015. Special thanks goes to aides Janeth and Amanda and nurse Jennifer. We also value the caregiving provided by Colleen of Brightstar. Honoring Ralphs wishes there will be no formal memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Iron Gate at Christ Episcopal, Animal Aid of Tulsa, SPCA of Tulsa, or a charity of the your choice.
