Betty Joyce Hess Smith of Claremore passed away on July 19, 2015. She was
born January 14, 1928 at Watts, Oklahoma to James Hugh Hess and Maude
Welch Hess. She graduated from Central High School, Tulsa, OK.
She was married to Luther Smith. She is survived by stepdaughters Lugenia
Counce and Dr. Linda Goeller, brother George Edward Hess, sisters Jean
Engler and Geneva Rush, niece and nephews Mary Smith, Tom Hess, Joe Hess,
Joy Hunt, Sonny Hess, David Hess, Delores Horvath, Michael Hess, Robin
Rush, Christopher Rush, Laurel Owens, Berry Rothhammer, Diane Dahl. She
was preceded in death by brothers Clarence Hess, John Hess, Brice Hess,
and Walter Hess. She is also survived by grandchildren AnnaBeth Kallenbach,
Dr. Emily Gulley, Dr. Trisha Counce, Alyssa Counce, Benjamin Counce, Jim
Goeller, and Laura Schley.
Betty was a 31-year employee of Dowell Division of the Dow Chemical Company
in Payroll and Accounting. She was a member of the Cherokee Nation and
grew up on a farm near Watts, OK on her mother’s Cherokee allotment.
She was a lifelong Baptist and made her profession of faith at age 11.
Betty and her husband established The Maude Welch Hess Memorial Scholarship
Fund at John Brown University, Siloam Springs, AR in honor of Betty’s
mother, descendant of Nancy Ward, a Cherokee noted for her service to
the Americans in the Revolutionary War. Betty was a member of Goingsnake
District Heritage Association, the Trail of Tears Association, Rogers
County Cherokee Association, and Association of Descendants of Nancy Ward,
and enjoyed attending the semi-annual meetings of Dowell Retirees.
